Back to School Shopping is Possible for Sonoma County's Needy Children Thanks to Active 20-30 Club

For many children, back to school shopping in preparation for the start of another academic year is a standard practice. New clothes, backpacks, and school supplies allow these children to start the new school year off with confidence. However, for thousands of Sonoma County's needy children, back to school shopping is something they only hear about and are not able to participate in.

On Saturday, August 6th, 2011, the Active 20-30 Clubs of the Redwood Empire, Santa Rosa, and Healdsburg will sponsor 191 Sonoma County kids in need to go back to school shopping. Each child will receive a $150 gift card to use at JC Penney, Old Navy, Icing, and Payless Shoes at Coddingtown Mall. In addition to new clothes, haircuts provided by Redwood Empire Beauty College, and vision and dental screenings provided by Dr. Buzza and Dr. John Kang. The children will also receive brand new backpacks filled with all the necessary school supplies appropriate to their grade level.

Children will be matched with an adult Active 20-30 Club volunteer who will assist them in selecting stylish clothes and shoes that fit properly. At the completion of the shopping spree, participants will receive a pancake breakfast cooked by the Santa Rosa Police Officer's Association.

Kidspree event co-chair, Marisa Zunino summed up the experience, “To be able to see the joy in these children's eyes when they get their first brand new clothes or shoes and to see them so excited and appreciative is what this club is all about.”

The Back to School Children's Shopping Spree is funded and organized by the local Active 20-30 Clubs, a social and philanthropic organization for young adults. The Children who participate in the event are referred by agencies including COTS, Boys & Girls Clubs, Millennium Housing, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Easter Egg Hunt 2011

On Saturday, April 23rd the Ladies of Redwood Empire #1029 held an Easter Egg Hunt for children residing in the Rohnert Park COTS housing development. The children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt, face painting, photographs with the Easter
Bunny, prizes, food, and fun!

Global Service Day with COTS!
On Saturday, April 9, 2011 fourteen Members of the Active 20-30 Club of the Redwood Empire gathered at the Committee on the Shelterless' Mary Isaak Center Emergency Shelter in Petaluma to refurbish the Children's Play Area. The Club not only provided over 130 hours of sweat equity, but they also donated over $1300 worth of supplies and items for the play area working in conjunction with twelve members from the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa #50.

"We are so excited about our new playground. What was once a dull, unimaginative yard of cement and turf is now a colorful, safe and engaging place for kids to play, ride, climb and build friendships. They and their parents are thrilled and so are we. Thank you 20/30 Clubs!" - Carrie Hess, Director Children's Programs at COTS in Petaluma

Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning.

Crab Feed 2011
The Ladies of Redwood Empire #1029 put on their most successful “Crab 4 Kids”
fundraiser in the chapter's history, raising over $35,000 to support Sonoma County Children's Charities and the Club's hands-on events, including the Annual Kid's Spree and Kid's Christmas Experience.

Over 400 tickets were sold, and our guests dined on fresh crab, pasta, salad, and bread. Guests were also able to bid on a variety of silent auction items which were donated by local businesses and Active 20-30 Club supporters. When dinner was finished, a DJ played and wild dancing ensued.

Tickets for the Crab Feed sold out this year. Don't miss out in 2012! Purchase your Crab Feed Tickets early!

Kids Christmas Experience 2010
Working with Millenium Housing, the Ladies of Redwood Empire #1029 provided under-served children with a Christmas experience to remember! We were able to fulfill wish list items for over 40 children, and thanks to our friends in Napa # 57, Santa was also able to give brand new bicycles and helmets to 20 children!

The Christmas experience included a full Christmas dinner (turkey, gravy, mashed
potatoes), craft projects, face painting, and games.

Halloween Hands-On 2010
In October 2010 Active 20-30 Club of the Redwood Empire threw a “spooktacular”
Halloween party for the children and families residing at Catholic Charities in Santa
Rosa. Each child received a brand new Halloween costume. Carnival games including bean bag tosses and the “fishing game” were a hit. We also entertained the children with face painting and cupcakes. Lots of candy was distributed, along with new toothbrushes and toothpaste for each child in attendance.

Kids Spree
Each August, the ladies of Redwood Empire #1029 work with local children's charities to select under-served children to participate in our annual Kids Shopping Spree event. Active 20-30 Members are matched with a child and spend the morning shopping for back to school clothes, shoes, and other necessities. For our 2010 Kid Spree we partnered with Santa Rosa #50 and were able to reach out to 200 Sonoma County children! Local hairstylists are on hand to give the kids new back to school haircuts, and each child receives a brand new backpack filled with age appropriate school supplies and essentials. Coddingtown Mall in Santa Rosa opens early for the event, and all of the children who participated went home with the latest back to school fashions and newfound confidence to start the year off right.
